A wayward traveler

This little guy was crossing the road, and I was afraid the grain trucks would smash him. So I gave him a lift to the creekside. What a long tail he has!

The fields are golden, and copper is my dog Red. The lane to Kingfisher Farm curves around the house.........hidden behind a stand of pines.

The Better Land by Henrietta Blackburn

I went to the antique market today, and this is what I could not leave without, this sampler. I immediately thought of my doll by Christine Crocker of Deerfield Farmhouse! So it came home with me. After looking in my treasured copy of Girlhood Embroidery by Betty Ring, I couldnt find any idea as to the date. So I google the title, and VOILA!
It was written by a woman! Felicia Hemans, or Felicia Browne. She used her poetry to support herself and her children, as her military husband left the household! So I can safely date the sampler to after the date her poem was written. AND my husband informed me that his great grandmother was named Burns, shortened from Blackburn! I had good fun taking this photo and sending it to Christine, who assured me that I hadnt paid too much for my treasure. I knew she would love it too.

They're HERE!!!

What is in this perferated box?? It sure is LOUD!! PEEP PEEP CHEEP CHEEP!!!
There is a lot of fluffy fuzz sticking out!
VOILA!!!Some are yellow, they are the brown egg layers. Some are lined like ground squirrels, those are the Americanas, green and blue egg layers! (They are cross breeds, Auracana and some laying stock chickens) My burgeoning egg selling business required new stock!!! 25 little hens, and one mystery chick. The hatchery always sends a free fancy chick with your order, and its fun to see what kind it becomes!

Gratitiude

Today as I pedaled my bike up the hill of our driveway, I dropped the chain. I had never done this before, rookie mistake! I got a new recumbant bike this year, since running hurts every part of me now, but the dogs need to run, so this has been a good thing. I run them early, before the heat and sun. The corn has turned mellow gold, and the tickseed a bright yellow daisy, peppering the banks of the creek. As I passed over the bridge, a gray crane burst from the water, into silent flight. Farther down the road, to a stand of walnut trees, my neighbors horses grazed. It's so pretty to me, where I live. Brutal is the heat of the summer, and last winter's ice storm knocked out the power for days, almost a week. But I am thankful I live in a peaceful place.
I have been doctoring my horse, he stepped on a nail. This is a new experience, doctoring a foot. Or was it?? My husband reminded me that when our child was an infant, he had to do the same thing to a borrowed horse that lived in our first victorian farmstead. I am so grateful the vet called me back yesterday, on a sunday, and told me I was doing some things right, and not to worry. To keep a horse's foot clean and dry is no easy matter. First you soak it in epsom salts. To do this, you must pour the salts in warm water until no more salt disolves. A saturated solution, the easy part is now done. Tricky part is getting the horse to stand there for 15 or 20 minutes without removing his foot, or dumping the bucket!
Today, as he knickered to me, I wondered if I would find a horse with a bandage on his foot! NO! He had removed his duct tape silver wrap I had so carefully fashioned the night before. But as I examined his foot, I felt a good sign, no heat!!! I was so happy!
This means the infection is gone, and healing is taking place. He isn't lame, I am so happy for this.
I am still sewing new bears for a mini update soon. Thanks to all of you for your visit to me here on the farm!

September Pocket Pets

Here they are, packed and ready to go, To SCOTLAND!!! I have been busy, not too talkative, I apologize. And my horse got a nail in his foot, so I will be tending to him for a few days. Next week promises some excitement here on the farm, so stay tuned, perhaps Wednesday or Thurday the story will be breaking news! Pam
