A phone call from Peng Peng!! What NEWS!!

I got a call from my dear friend Peng Peng, she said, Did you get it?? I got my STUFFED!The article is HUGE!! OMG P( she calls me P, I call her PP or double P) you should be on the cover! Its incredble! Its HUGE. I never get magazines the same day she does, I live down in the boondocks. Our mail comes by mule train, her mail comes by plane! But I sent Hubby out to peek in our mailbox, and he delivered to me a magazine wrapped in shrink wrap. And there it was... 6 pages, and the story they asked me to write!! One minor wrinkle. Our name is spelled "Overmeier", instead of "Overmier". No big deal!! It's a huge honor, and the photographs are HUGE just like Pengy Girl says. I have to give props to Danita, her blog alerted me to the new publication. So Thank you Danita, she is the featured artist in the Artist Portfolio.
You must see the magazine! Go to Barnes and Noble and ask for it. Or go order it online, it's simply adorable. And I am so excited to be a part of it. There may be celebrating of unprecedented decadence down on the farm!!

Fantastic Plastic Christmas, with a Crispy Treat!

The dolly with her scintillating blue sleep eyes, $1.50 at the Third Sunday.

Someone carefully pinned rayon faux fur to her, making her into a snow baby.
Here is the grungy meets fantastic plastic display. I love rusty wire, old baskets and bears, but would they like some plastic? My grandmother's tree fascinated me. She had these little ornaments with fans in them, spinners they are called. I stared at them for hours, you had to do something with that sugar cookie high! Her lights were big and chunky, and the heat generated by them made the fans whir, and they glittered hypnotically in the light. You can buy back your whole childhood on eBay. So here it is, all the plastic I had, tiny umbrellas, cribs, sleighs, angels, its all on my mini plastic feather trees.

a knitted bunny, so sweet.

The dolly and above her another of the West Germany Snow Angels from the thrift.

The blue tree has spinners and a white plastic sleigh at the base, and white plastic reindeer. See the pink plasic umbrella?

There are a few tiny pink and blue rattles, plastic, and they do rattle. How many times do you have to read the word plastic?? Ok I'm done lol.

It's no secret I like to cook. I like to experiment, however, I seldom write down the artistic substitutions made during my culinary adventures. Hubby says, this is good. Write down the recipe before you forget so you can make this for me again! Baklava is one treat that I didn't change the ingredients, at least, not much! I mainly changed the consistency of the filling.

Baklava

from the Joy of Cooking by Irma Rombauer nee von Starkoff, 1877-1962

You need: one package of phyllo dough sheets, take out one package and let thaw

first: add these ingredients to a small heavy saucepan to make a syrup, I put on the back burner over a heat diffuser and let simmer:

1/2 lemon
1/2 C honey
3/4 C water

This takes a while to make a syrup which coats the back of a spoon, when it does, remove from heat and cool.

Put in food processor: 3/4 C hazelnuts and 3/4 C almonds

2T sugar 1/8 t ground cloves and 1t cinnamon

whirl this until it is a course meal. I don't like the traditional chunky nut filling, so this is my twist.

melt one cup of unsalted butter.

Butter your cake pan and begin laying out sheets of phyllo, one at a time, buttering with a pastry brush each layer. Caution, if your dough is still frozen it will shatter, and if you let it get too soft it sticks together, and gets stretchy! Layer 12 sheets, then add the filling. Layer and butter the remaining 12 sheets. Cut the baklava into diamond shapes, and put into a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes, turn up heat to 475 and bake about 15 more minutes, watch so it doesn't burn!
Here is the dough on the right, unfolded and you can see the filling on top of the 12th layer on the left.
Right from the oven! Before pouring the syrup over it all. Pour it evenly all over the top!
Remove from oven and pour your cooled syrup all over your hot baklava. (discard the lemon )

Enjoy, watch it disappear like magic.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you from Kingfisher Farm!

Coat Shopping

Ok, my coat lining is harder than I thought, it's sewn in the armhole seams, and if I pick it out that means I have to resew the armholes too, this makes me nervous. Hubby said if I stopped shopping online and got to work I'd be done already. Does anyone else have a hubby that talks too much?? (what nerve!) He said that: Coat #1:

Would make me look like Pat Nixon. Coat #2:

Would make me look like Edith Bunker. Oh Archie!! Coat#3:

Would make me look like a fur person, "You're not a fur person! What if someone said, look at that fur wearing #%*&?" Coat #4:

He laughed and walked out of the room!!
So readers, what do I get? Coat number one and a cocker spaniel named Checkers?
Coat #2 and make my daughter wear a blond wig with pigtails and a rat tease hair helmet on top??
Or #3 and a black toy poodle??? (With a rhinestone leash and collar of course!)
Or #4 and a chocolate toy poodle, red rhinestone collar and leash and red beret????
I'm leaning towards#4. I can't see myself as Pat or Edith I just dont have their personalty. I like the certain "je ne sais quoi" quality to that one, and I could wear a pin on my lapel that says, "dont worry its FAUX!!
What do you think? Just kidding about the poodle. But hey, no one's stopping me!

The Corsages!

The angel is marked West Germany, and was scored at the local thrift. She has brass wings, stamped out of a sheet of metal. The reflector is one of the really early ones. I added vintage chenille and pushed little wooden green bells on the ends, and a bit of pink german glass glitter in the ends. The fabulous fuschia ribbon was probably made for easter baskets. The base ribbon is actually vintage blanket binding. This one is hubby's favorite, and he won't let me sell it!

This one is my favorite. I drilled an old dice, and glued wires on the back of the plastic pony pieces. I covered the hole in the reflector with a snail of tinsel and added the vintage plastic cameo. So this is "The lady bets on the horses". The reflector back on this one is the same kind as the angel. I had intended to use a gold one, but I got distracted!!

Here is the angel again, on my heavy coat. Oops, the lining isnt ready so no pic of the coat, yet! This shows what it looked like before I added the glitter to the ends of the chenille. What a difference that tiny touch made.

We have been to 2 performances of Millikin University's Vespers. Vespers means evening prayers. It is a choral and orchestral performance, and our little Leah is performing, singing in it, in front of sold out audiences! It was amazing. Since it is recorded, and they sell the CD's, I was not allowed to record it or take photos, boohoo. She has 2 more performances today. So not much time for creating. Hope you like my pins, and take a peek at my printed image and rag ones in my etsy shop!

Leah in her uniform, the kids wear red bows and navy blazers onstage. Her friend is borrowing a silk kimono since it is a rather dressy affair.

A New Coat fit for Christmas Corsages!

I am busy subbing at school so I have had limited time to post, but here is a corsage pin in my etsy shop. It's called the Christmas Pony. Notice the dangling horseshoe charm. Its made of vintage 1930's plaid and scraps of hand syed green mohair, ribbon, and quilt shop calicos. The bearded snowman crafted during last week's first snowfall. Leah and her best friend made do with the old stash of snowman making clothes. His pinecone buttons came from our white pines.
My "new" coat. I bought it for $15 a few years ago at the Third Sunday Market. It dates to the 1910 time period, is crafted of heavy cotton velvet, lined in satin and flannel. Look at the pretty bows around this tiny pocket. I suspect this was a clever way for the wearer to find the pocket in the dark, in an era before electricity! The coat needs a bit of cleaning, and I am going to replace the lining with a new black one. I will have to find a way to close it, since the original toggles are gone. But the buttons that remain are incredible. But fragile. Still, I am going to enjoy it. It weighs a ton! Imagine wearing it in a sleigh, on the train, or in a model T car. It's that old!

The dainty pocket with bows at each corner.

Wide lapels, perfect for Christmas pins and corsages!

The gorgeous hand corded wooden buttons. It must have taken hours of work just for the buttons! I will miss the powder blue lining, but black will be more practical.

Check back Sunday to see it with its new lining and my new corsages I am making for Beth Holcomb's corsage party!! Oh it is going to be so fun!!! All my best to you. Pam
